The significance of the Tonopah Test Range

The Tonopah Test Range (TTR), located approximately 30 miles southeast of Tonopah, Nevada, played an often lesser-known role in the United States’ nuclear weapons program. While no nuclear detonations took place at Tonopah, the site played a significant role in testing nuclear weapons components, delivery systems, and safety mechanisms, helping ensure the reliability of the nation’s nuclear arsenal.

A brief timeline of Tonopah Test Range

Established in 1957, the Tonopah Test Range operated as an extension of the Nevada Test Site and became a major location for non-nuclear weapons testing. Activities included bomb drop tests from aircraft, ballistic and aerodynamic evaluations, and testing of weapon casings and safety features. These tests allowed scientists and engineers to assess how nuclear weapons would perform during real-world deployment, without producing a nuclear explosion. Many of the weapons tested at TTR were intended for use by the U.S. Air Force and were later deployed in the nation’s nuclear stockpile. Tonopah Test Range features one of the longest bomb-drop corridors in the United States.

Testing at Tonopah was most active from the late 1950s through the 1980s, and many tests were conducted at night to reduce visibility and maintain secrecy during the Cold War. These early operations at TTR were overseen by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in coordination with Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, and the U.S. Air Force. After the AEC was dissolved in 1974, responsibility transferred to the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) and later to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Weapons shapes, delivery accuracy and safety systems testing continued until the 1990’s, when focus then transitioned to environmental monitoring, remediation and restricted military testing. 

Environmental and community impact

Environmental impacts at the site included soil contamination from depleted uranium, explosive residues, buried debris, and scrap materials. Although TTR is located in a remote area of Nevada, long-term environmental monitoring has been required to ensure contaminants do not migrate beyond controlled boundaries.

Government response and cleanup efforts

As of today, the Tonopah Test Range is now managed under the DOE’s legacy environmental stewardship programs with continued surveillance. These programs have conducted extensive site investigations, soil removal and disposal, long-term groundwater and radiation monitoring, established land-use restrictions and installed protective perimeter fencing.

Adverse health effects among workers

Despite the absence of nuclear detonations, Tonopah Test Range workers were exposed to several high-risk industrial and radiological materials during weapons testing, recovery, and cleanup operations. 

Radioactive materials - Exposure to these materials, including plutonium residue and fission products, occurred while handling weapon components, during recovery of test devices after drops, through inhalation of contaminated dust and through skin contact during maintenance and cleanup. Resulting health effects may include lung, bone and liver cancer and leukemia, as well as genetic and cellular damage.

Depleted uranium - Depleted Uranium (DU) is both chemically toxic and radioactive. When inhaled, fine DU particles embed deep in the lungs and can migrate into the bloodstream, putting workers at risk of lung cancer and neurological symptoms. As uranium is filtered through renal tissue, the kidneys become especially vulnerable and are put at risk of kidney disease. Exposure to DU could have occurred from impact debris after drop tests and dust inhalation during demolition or cleanup.

Beryllium - Workers’ exposure to Beryllium may have occurred from machining weapons components, dust from metal fabrication and inadequate respiratory protection. Beryllium triggers an immune system reaction in susceptible individuals. Once sensitized, even tiny exposures can cause chronic inflammation in the lungs, leading to permanent scarring, breathing difficulties, increased lung cancer risk and Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD).

Contaminated dust & silica - Dust particles act as carriers for radioactive and toxic materials. When inhaled repeatedly, they cause chronic lung irritation, scarring, and reduced oxygen exchange. When combined with radiation exposure, cancer risk increases significantly. Exposure to contaminated dust and silica may have occurred during desert windstorms, vehicle traffic on test ranges and soil disturbances during recovery operations, all responsible for kicking up toxic dust.

Many of these diseases have long latency periods, meaning symptoms may not appear for 10–40 years after exposure. This delayed onset is one reason former Tonopah workers may not connect their illness to workplace exposure until much later, but many are still recognized under federal compensation programs like EEOICPA.

Approved for EEOICPA White Card benefits

The Tonopah Test Range site is an approved location for The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program or the EEOICPA White Card Program.

As of August 2026, Tonopah Test Site workers have received over $452 million in EEOICPA compensation and medical bills paid.
